Access Bank, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, has appointed a temporary replacement for its CEO, Herbert Wigwe, following his tragic demise in a helicopter crash alongside five others last Friday.
Ms Bolaji Agbede, Access Bank’s most senior founding executive director, will assume the CEO position on an acting basis, as announced by the bank’s parent company, Access Holdings PLC.
With nearly 30 years of experience in banking and business consultancy, Ms. Agbede has been with Access Bank since 2003, bringing a wealth of expertise to her new role.
Mr Wigwe’s chartered helicopter was en route from Palm Springs to Boulder City in Nevada, USA, when it crashed approximately 96km (60 miles) from Las Vegas.
Nigerian media reports indicate that the 57-year-old banker was traveling to Las Vegas to attend Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Mr Wigwe established Access Bank in 1989, and under his leadership, it became Nigeria’s largest bank in 2018 following the acquisition of its main competitor, Diamond Bank.
