The National pledge is gender insensitive- Honorable Adwoa Safo
Honorable Adwoa Safo, who is the member of parliament for Dome kwabenya constituency has been trending on social media for suggesting a review of the National pledge.
honorable Adwoa Safo, in a surprising turn of event recently lost her parliamentary seat to Mike Oquaye jnr in the new patriotic party (Npp) primary elections.
According to her, the part that says “through the blood and toils of our fathers” decries gender insensitivity as mothers have been omitted in that part.
she made this suggestion after the house recited the national pledge, marking the implementation of the new standing orders in parliament.
she explained that, mothers also toil for this country and is mostly referred as our motherland so why omit mothers in that part.
in her own words she’s says “Mr. speaker, the mothers also toiled for this country, Mr. speaker i think that it is gender insensitive. This country, when we are even making reference to the country, we call it our motherland, but when it comes to the pledge and we are referring to the toil, and we are referring to the fight, the struggle, we omit that of our mothers. Mr. speaker, i want to draw your attention to it and we have to look at it again as a country, so that we become more gender sensitive when it comes to our national pledge. I thank you Mr. speaker”.
This is her first public speech after she lost her seat at the just ended parliamentary primaries of the Npp to Mike Oquaye jnr.
